Technical Indicators Chart Patterns: How to Combine Them for Higher Win Rates

Chart patterns tell you what price is doing. Technical indicators tell you what is happening beneath the surface — momentum, trend strength, volatility. Combined, they give you the full picture.

The Three-Indicator Rule

Use no more than three indicators alongside pattern analysis. Each should measure something different:

  1. Momentum (RSI, MACD, Stochastic)
  2. Trend (Moving averages, ADX)
  3. Volume (Volume, OBV, VWAP)

RSI + Chart Patterns

RSI divergence at pattern boundaries

The single most valuable indicator-pattern combination:

  • Bullish RSI divergence at a double bottom: Price makes equal lows, RSI makes a higher low. Sellers weakening. Pattern more likely to succeed.
  • Bearish RSI divergence at a double top: Price makes equal highs, RSI makes a lower high. Buyers exhausted.
  • RSI divergence within a triangle: If RSI trends in one direction while price compresses, the breakout is more likely to follow RSI's direction.

RSI breakout confirmation

RSI crossing above 50 on a bullish breakout is strong confirmation. RSI already above 70 at breakout may limit upside — consider a smaller position.

MACD + Chart Patterns

MACD with flags

MACD staying above the signal line during a bull flag confirms momentum is intact. If MACD crosses below during the flag, the "flag" may be a deeper correction.

MACD with head and shoulders

MACD deterioration across the three peaks gives early warning: positive and rising at the left shoulder, high but lower than expected at the head, declining at the right shoulder.

MACD histogram for breakout timing

Histogram shifting from negative to positive (bullish) signals that a triangle or rectangle breakout is imminent.

Moving Averages + Chart Patterns

The 50-day MA as pattern validator

The 50-day moving average can describe trend context. Compare outcomes with and without a trend filter before claiming that it increases win rate.

Crossovers within patterns

A golden cross (20-day above 50-day) within a basing pattern (rounding bottom, inverse H&S) confirms the trend change. A death cross within a topping pattern adds conviction.

Dynamic support in channels

In ascending channels, the 20-day MA often acts as dynamic support along the lower boundary — buy when price touches both the channel support and the 20-day MA.

Volume Indicators + Chart Patterns

OBV with accumulation patterns

Rising OBV during a basing pattern (double bottom, rectangle) confirms institutions are buying even though price appears stuck.

VWAP for intraday breakouts

A pattern breakout above VWAP has institutional backing. Below VWAP, institutions are likely selling.

Practical Combinations

Double Bottom + RSI Divergence + Volume Increase: One of the highest-probability setups.

Bull Flag + MACD Above Signal + Price Above 50-Day MA: A clean continuation setup.

Head and Shoulders + MACD Divergence + Declining OBV: Bearish reversal confirmed from three angles.

What NOT to Do

  • Do not use indicators to override patterns. Overbought RSI does not invalidate a valid breakout.
  • Do not wait for perfect alignment. Two of three indicators confirming is enough.
  • Do not use the same type twice. RSI and Stochastic both measure momentum — pick one.
