Three Tests of Support — and Each One Holds
If a double bottom tells you that a support level is strong, a triple bottom screams it. Three separate tests of the same price floor, with each test failing to break through, create one of the highest-conviction bullish reversal signals you will find on a chart.
The triple bottom pattern is rarer than the double bottom — by the third test, many stocks have either broken down or bounced already. When you do find one, the pattern's completion rate and measured move accuracy are among the best across all technical patterns.
What Makes a Valid Triple Bottom
Three Distinct Troughs
Each trough should touch the same approximate support level (within 2-3% of each other). The three lows should be separated by visible rallies between them — each trough needs its own distinct shape.
Time Between Troughs
Each trough should be separated by at least 2-3 weeks. A triple bottom that forms over 3 days is just choppy price action. The best triple bottoms develop over 2-4 months, with each test of support separated by meaningful rallies.
Two Neckline Peaks
Between the three troughs, there are two rally peaks. Connect these peaks to form the neckline. The neckline is your trigger line.
Volume Progression
This is the key that most traders miss:
- First trough: Heavy volume on the selloff (capitulation selling)
- Second trough: Moderate volume — lighter than the first. Some sellers are exhausted.
- Third trough: The lightest volume of all three tests. The sellers are spent.
- Breakout above neckline: Volume surges as buyers take control
The declining volume across the three troughs is what validates the pattern. It shows a progressive exhaustion of selling pressure.
Trading the Triple Bottom Pattern Reversal
Entry
Buy when price closes above the neckline (connecting the two peaks between the troughs) on above-average volume.
- Aggressive entry: Full position on the neckline break candle.
- Conservative entry: Half position on the break, add the other half on a successful retest of the neckline from above.
AAPL formed a triple bottom near the $125 level, with troughs in three successive months, each on decreasing volume. The neckline break at $138 triggered a rally to $155 — right at the measured move target.
Stop-Loss
Place your stop 1-2% below the triple bottom lows. If all three support tests fail, the stock is going lower, and you need to exit cleanly.
Because the triple bottom has been tested three times, the support level is extremely significant. A break below it is a high-conviction sell signal, so you do not want to give it extra room.
Measured Move Target
Measure the distance from the triple bottom lows to the neckline. Project that distance upward from the neckline breakout.
Example: Three troughs at $50, neckline at $58. Distance = $8. Target = $58 + $8 = $66.
Triple Bottom vs. Double Bottom
Both are bullish reversal patterns, but they have key differences:
- Conviction: The triple bottom shows stronger support because it has been tested one additional time. Higher conviction for traders.
- Rarity: Triple bottoms are less common. Not every double bottom gets a third test — most break out or break down after two.
- Duration: Triple bottoms take longer to form, which means more time for sellers to capitulate and buyers to accumulate.
- Win rate: The triple bottom has a slightly higher completion rate than the double bottom, but the difference is modest (both are around 70-75%).
Triple Bottom in Crypto
BTC forms triple bottoms at major psychological levels — round numbers like $20,000, $30,000, $60,000 — where massive buy walls on exchanges create a natural floor.
The crypto triple bottom tends to play out faster than its stock market counterpart. On the 4-hour chart, a crypto triple bottom might form over 2-3 weeks instead of 2-3 months.
The volume profile in crypto is particularly telling. On centralized exchanges, you can see the exact order book levels where buy walls sit. When price tests these levels three times and the buy wall holds each time, the triple bottom is exceptionally strong.
Common Mistakes with Triple Bottoms
Buying the third bounce before the neckline breaks. Just because the support held three times does not mean it will hold a fourth time. Wait for the neckline break to confirm the reversal.
Confusing a triple bottom with a range. If price is just bouncing between two levels without making any progress, it is a trading range, not a triple bottom. True triple bottoms have defined peaks between the troughs that form a neckline.
Ignoring the broader trend. A triple bottom in a stock that is fundamentally deteriorating (earnings declining, debt increasing) may be a trap. The pattern works best when the selloff was driven by sentiment rather than fundamentals.
Advanced: Combining with Indicators
Layer these signals on top of your triple bottom trades:
- RSI bullish divergence: If RSI makes a higher low on the third trough while price makes an equal low, the momentum shift is confirmed.
- MACD crossover: A bullish MACD cross occurring near the third trough adds confluence.
- Above the 200-day MA (market): Trading triple bottoms when the broader market is above its 200-day MA gives you a macro tailwind.
